It’s coming up to one year since I opened my Gold card account. The original plan was for me to close my account and for my husband to open one with me as the additional card holder.
However I’ve just noticed that there’s a referral offer in which I get 18000 points and he gets 35000, which is great.
I can refer him today, but I don’t think we’ll spend the £3K necessary before my anniversary to trigger my bonus points, so I’m not sure what’s best to do. I think I may be able to downgrade to a blue points card (after he has his new card and before my year is up), but is that the right thing to do? That way I can keep my points and hedge my bets about which scheme to use them in, but it means I can’t apply for another Amex Gold card in 2 years. And would I still get the bonus points?
Decisions, decisions. Advice would be gratefully received.
What bonus are you due before the card anniversary? Not clear what you meant by that.
If you refer him now, you will get the referral points immediately (within 1-2 days), and it’s not dependant on him hitting the spend target. You’ll be free to downgrade/cancel. If you cancel, you will need to transfer your points out, but downgrading will keep your points safe.
