My Amex Plat (old chargecard) is due to renew in the next few weeks. I’ve tried to get a retention bonus a few times over the last month which would probably swing it but nothing showing on my account which isn’t surprising as rarely use plat card.
I’ve got value out of the benefits in past years Dining credits home and abroad but a little less travel this year so less use of the benefits. I might just wait to cancel until main travel has finished in August. I’m also hopeful that Qatar may do a MR transfer offer….maybe too much of an optimist but I’m sitting on 200k MR points.
Am I right in thinking I can cancel at any point for a refund? Are other people feeling underwhelmed by AMEX plat direction and benefits?
All cards can still do pro rata refunds at the moment, expectation is that this stays the same
for a while for the charge card.
when was the last time you had a retention bonus they are usually once a year to the day.
There are a number of threads and articles where people have commented on the value of the plat card so you can have a read of those.
I don’t believe they refund anymore.
If they don’t extend the dining credit past 2024, I’ll be cancelling as well!
You can certainly cancel at any time (and get a pro-rata fee refund at the current time, though this is due to change at some point).

I’ve asked about 7 weeks ago and they said nothing on the account but check closer to renewal date, I asked again today and nothing going, I was direct and to the point in asking for a retention bonus :-), it could be that it’s might be just under 12 months since the last one.

@dundj interested in why you think a call will be more likely to result in a retention offer than going down the chat route? Do you have empirical evidence or is this just your experience?

I’ve always called up, and always been offered at least 50k MR points each year. I do call with the intention of cancelling a few weeks prior to the fee being charged on the basis I would then refer player 2 and cancel once the MR points are transferred out. Tried chat twice and got monthly payment plans over two separate years, so personal experience does equal my empirical evidence, not to mention the number of people in the retention thread with similar, maybe not the number of MR points, who have reported that chat is worse than calling.

I did use the chat both times…..being turned down by phone would feel even more of a rejection!
