Forums Payment cards American Express Amex Platinum household income

I’m looking to refer my wife to get the 80k+20k SUB.

Our household income is ~£150k, but her personal income is only £20k.

Is this going to be an automatic refusal, or is there a chance they’ll take household income into account? I don’t want her to have the hard credit search if I know it will be refused.

Amex has a requirement re personal income that needs to be £35k+ for the Platinum and it seems Amex no longer accepts household income as that provides no basis for collecting any bad debts and risks issues of unsecured lending to customers without a sufficiently large direct source of repayment.

    Automatic refusal is my guess.

If you want to refer her for a MR card, the gold one is probably the best option, with no fee for the first year. Unfortunately there was an enhanced SUB which finished recently so you may want to wait a bit longer and see if another comes along.

There’s also an offer via avios.com for a 15k avios SUB on the free card, but unless you’re going to spend £15k and use the poorer companion voucher, the gold card probably has a better return.

Please can you tell me where you see the 80k+20k SUB?

When you say her income is £20k, if this is from employment, do you supplement this with anything from your own income?

I ask, because on the application there is an allowance for spousal contribution, e.g. someone could have an income of £36k comprising £20k employment, £10k spouse contribution, £6k investment income.

I’m not suggesting you should lie on the application, only that if you genuinely make a regular transfer to your wife, this would count.
