Has anyone found the official line for the UK based card concerning pregnancy? ie are pregnant ladies covered, up until which week, and whether any proof is required?
I’m finding conflicting information, Google is for eg bringing up Australian and US policy wording. Can’t see anything obvious on the UK wording. There’s a mention on the Amex Travel website re carrying a letter from 28 weeks, however this appears to relate to Amex travel bookings vs the Platinum insurance.
Any pointers much appreciated!
You should always check these things with Amex/Axa directly but for what it’s worth the Amex Plat policy deals with pregnancy as an allowed ‘pre-condition’ but has the rider “provided no complications” – you should find that document in your insurance portal. The word ‘no’ is underlined so I would expect it to be strictly interpreted at each stage of the trip – so no complications at the time of booking and nothing in the intervening period before travel.
It’s not really a very satisfactory wording as it is far too subjective and you effectively only get to find out whether you were covered after the event. I would say it’s fairly normal to report some concerns that might get reported in your notes – does that constitute a “complication”? Personally, I would prefer to rely on a policy that covers pregnancy up to x weeks provided not travelling against advice. It’s yet another basic weakness of this policy.
I equally found it difficult to get a line/wording in the T&Cs. I used the chat function on Amex who were unable to clarify too.
To give some context, we booked a trip to New York in June 2022 for Oct 2022 and my wife fell pregnant in July 2022. She had a horrible pregnancy feeling sick pretty much throughout so we cancelled about a week before and we were refunded it all (apart from excess) through Amex Plat. We had a note from the Dr saying she was not fit to fly.
