My partner has a medical condition that is not on the list of pre-existing medical conditions which are covered by the Amex Platinum Travel Insurance. It’s a condition that is normally covered by other insurers by just answering a few simple questions.
Has anyone had any experience of getting the Amex Travel Insurance Policy extended to include cover (even for an additional premium) or bought a separate policy that covers certain medical conditions.
Thanks.

You can’t ‘buy out’ or pay extra for any conditions to be covered with Amex Plat. I’m not aware of any policies that just cover certain medical conditions.

Tried with similar, you cannot engage with them, all B&W and if its not on the list, not covered. I came away without confidence in Amex insurance unless it is car hire etc or you are a perfectly healthy individual with clear cut pre-existing covered on the Amex list. I ended up taking out separate cover via a Nationwide Flex + account, that was simple to add conditions and other cover on. Easy to deal with the insurance CS team also.
Thanks very much, that’s what I expected. It just reduces the value of the Card when you need to buy a separate travel insurance policy on top.
The Amex Platinum Travel insurance is useless for the medical cover if you are on medication for relatively common things like hypertension or hypercholesterolaemia.
People on here point out that you’re covered for accidents etc, but it really defeats the purpose of insurance if you can’t be treated for a heart attack etc.
I’ve found Nationwide FlexPlus account far more flexible with covering a wide range of pre-existing conditions. You do not need pay more for some conditions, but getting them covered is a simple phonecall.
You are absolutely correct that it devalues the value of The Platinum Card considering the Travel Insurance is so rigid.
On this note how does the HSBC Premier offering compare? Are you able to add pre existings to it like you can with Nationwide?

Yes HSBC also has the option to be flexible (unlike Amex). Give them a call and find out. I did this before upgrading my account to Premier to see if I’d be covered. They were happy to tell me (positively).
