Recently AMEX of USA has additional 30% transfer bonus toward virgin atlantic, sadly it doesn’t apply to the UK.
Does anyone know how often this offer appears in the UK? or it never happen before?
Thanks
Transfer bonuses only seem to happen with HSBC here. Never seen an Amex one, presumably as they face basically 0 competition vs US
Won’t happen. Amex is desperate to stop people redeeming for airline miles (for which they pay a crazily high price) and to take gift cards or statement credit instead (0.5p cost to Amex).
@anuj It’s a completely different market and much more profitable, just look at some the sign up bonuses on US cards.
@Rob You have contradicted yourself here slightly, in the article on Qatar transfers you talk about bonuses but then say here that it would never happen. That said, apart from the odd transfer bonus from the HSBC WE card I can’t remember seeing anything for years.

The difference is Qatar will be paying for it, and it’s most likely a one off, while in US, Amex pays most of it out of its own marketing budget.
Why do they have so many in the US then?
Simple economics. Interchange fees can go up to 2-3% in US while it’s less than 0.5% here. Plus competition between card providers.
@BBbetter Qatar will pay for the bonus but Amex will stay have to pay for the main part which Rob says they are reluctant to do?

But that’ll be common for both US and UK. We are talking about the differences here – which is the incremental bonus.
Even in the US, Amex would prefer that points are redeemed for credit or gift cards, but due to competition, they are forced to offer bonuses.
Really hope Chase shakes things up.
And more products like Revolut ultra.
