We have a large number of AMEX points, which are convertible to AirNZ Dollars however the rate is poor. Is there any way to convert to another star alliance program, say Air Canada or such, from AMEX points first at a good rate then through to Air NZ dollars?
Looking at buying domestic NZ flights this way on a international trip, but can appreciate its somewhat of a niche question. Havent seen a table of conversions or such but any links appreciated.
AirNZ air points dollars are a straight swap for cash. 1 Airpoints dollar = 1 $NZD. That may be why the exchange rate looks poor on first glance, but may not actually be (I haven’t done the sums).
I don’t see Airpoints dollars as an exchange option though – is that for a NZ registered Amex?
No idea about your main question but my experience of Air NZ domestic flights (late October 2024 & booked months in advance) is that they are relatively cheap and single class so the benefit of finding a way of using Amex rewards would seem limited.
Conversely earning points on Air NZ domestic flights is odd – you can earn their own AirNZ dollars but with Star Alliance partners such as Singapore Krisflyer view them as not valid and earn nothing. The Air NZ dollars are ‘special’; I don’t think you can transfer them out to anywhere.
The lounges in NZ are ‘exclusive’ too, we arrived on an Air NZ business class international flight and had booked a separate domestic flight a few hours later. There is no lounge in International arrivals and the domestic departures lounge can only be accessed by members (no idea of their criteria) but you cannot buy a pass. We could only go to the lounge entrance and plead.Domestic lounges are Koru lounges – you can buy membership, not a one-off pass.
Can you not redeem other star alliance miles on domestic NZ flights?
