Forums Payment cards American Express Amex points transfer advice

  • 1 post

Hi All, looking for some advice. My parents have accumulated 112k Amex points on their gold cards – they are not really travelling anymore due to their age so they just want to redeem them against buying some electrical goods with an online retailer which I know is not a great way to use them. I have a BA Amex card and accumulate Avios which I frequently use (with companion voucher) for reward flights so I’m wondering if it would be a better idea for me to give my parents a cash sum to ‘purchase’ the Amex points at a better value than they would get by redeeming them with an online retailer? If so, what would be a fair value for them and what would be the most efficient way to transfer them or get access to them? Appreciate your help!

They can transfer to their BA account. You would need the recipient to be in same household as you and then you can use them

    Do they have BAC accounts?

If not they need to be created.

Then transfer the avios into their individual accounts from their individual cards.

Then you create a HHA which allows you to use them.

Best not to use words like “buy and sell” as that’s against the T&C but there’s nothing to stop a good son / daughter buying their parents a washing machine or groceries …

But a good son / daughter would use a rate like 1p per avios rather than lower rates from using the points for shopping.

1p per Avios when redeeming for flights is generally considered a fair, if rough & ready, estimate of value.

If redeeming for shops and suchlike, they usually convert at a rate of 0.5p per Avios (this is the same rate if they used them as a credit towards their balance on the Gold cards, could be another option.)

I think you can buy Avios for around 0.9p if you use Avios Boost (someone can confirm the exact price), so I wouldn’t be paying more than that for them.

Split the difference between 1p and what they can get the way they planned to spend them?
