Forums Payment cards American Express Amex refusing to downgrade Premium Plus card

  • 11 posts

    Hi,
My wife took out a BA PP card for the sign up bonus and planned to downgrade once the companion voucher was triggered. Which it now has. Amex agent (offshore) however refused to downgrade because “it was not a current offer on the account”! Challanged of course but they were insistent. I had no such issues downgrading my PP card a few months ago. Before we go into battle with them is this something that any other HFP members have experienced and what was the outcome? Apologies if this is already covered on here, I did search the forums but could not find anything.
    Many thx.

I downgraded last week and new card arrived yesterday. Called number on the back of the card to downgrade.

If you want to downgrade then I think the last time I did it, I just applied for the BA Amex (blue). It is not possible to have both cards in the same name, so they will automatically downgrade you.

Maybe don’t refer to ‘a downgrade’. Just say you want to switch from PP to the free card. We did it recently and it was seamless – same account number, it all still works during the switchover, and you will get a pro-rata refund of the PP fee.

You don’t say if you’ve done this before. Amex is cracking down.

What’s the issue though? It’s a downgrade, not an upgrade (where it does make a difference for 241 reasons). Just cancel and immediately reapply.

They also didn’t downgrade my Plat into Gold. Tried twice. Never downgraded any card before.
Their loss, cancelled it and now using the free MR card.

Thanks. First and only downgrade attempt. Want to keep the account in case there are issues whith another card used on the spend when the 2-4-1 vouchers earnt gets used.

    Won’t be an issue.
