So I’ll be travelling to Jordan and the ticket was bought for me by a mate, not on AMEX. I’ll be taking my wife, and she doesn’t have a supplementary card.
Do I, and my wife still get travel insurance?
You didnt specify which type of Amex you have. Assuming its the Platinum it is highly unlikely you will be covered for most if not all of their services as you need to have purchased the flight with any Amex.
If the retailer didnt accept amex, you need to show proof of this but I doubt you will have any as your mate purchased it and they would most likely have accepted Amex.
The only applicable cover you’d have would be the medical one, if you are an Amex Plat cardholder. Oh and the car insurance one.
… but medical might be enough. Do you REALLY need the other bits of the policy? Enough to pay through the nose for a 2nd policy?
You probably don’t need them… until you do!
My wife found this out the hard way after an inbound flight cancellation left her and her travelling companions effectively high and dry. Having not booked the flights herself (the person who did may have even paid the fare in copper coins, never mind a debit card) she didn’t have the peace of mind of booking a hotel for the night right away and then claiming back from Amex afterwards. There was apparently no one from the airline at the airport to help, and a third part agent was just stalling for time till just after midnight. A stressful situation all around, which I think would have been prevented had she had the ability to just book an extra stay (with a fairly generous allowance!) and transfers, with the knowledge that everything would be covered.

Just to clarify, even though I didn’t book it on my Amex Platinum, I’m covered for health insurance?
Sure – totally. And your wife.
Says me, a random bloke on the internet.
Unless you’re over 70.
Or have excluded pre-existing conditions.
If you log into your account, and select “visit insurance centre” under “benefits & help” you can confirm for yourself.
Coz I could be a lying toad.
But I’m not.
