Forums Frequent flyer programs The British Airways Club Annoying quirk when booking reward ticket from abroad

  • 351 posts

Tried yesterday morning to book 241 at 00.00 utc. I’m in south Africa. All went well until stored credit card. Location had put me in SA so BA didn’t recognise i had a stored credit card. By time I’d realised issue reset my country to UK I’d missed the boat.

Once I knew what to do, and a few dummy runs right though to almost pressing pay ,then this morning it only added 5 seconds and all was well.

I don’t understand why because I’m abroad, BA doesn’t recognise UK credit card unless I change country to UK.

At 00.00 am every second counts

I’ve never had this when booking at T-355 from the US and Caribbean.

You can deny location permissions in your web browser.

I see this more as an anti fraud measure.

Unfortunately there are some countries that have a reputation for fraud so I’d the BA site detected you were in SA then it might be sensible to add this extra layer to protect you.

It seems to be a “convenience” thing. BA sets the billing country to the country it thinks you are in.

I’m currently in Australia and when I booked a BA redemption it set the default billing country to Australia – I just entered my UK Amex details without changing the country and it went through fine.

The next time I was in the UK I had the same issue as the OP, the card was saved as an “Australian” card.

Perhaps every second counts but it takes 5 seconds to change the country if you want to access the saved card numbers

I denying location in dummy runs, booking economy as no CW left, it then went even funnier , didn’t pick up my mobile number and randomly put me in Saudi Arabia. I changed it to UK and restarted , but went back to Saudi . So better with location on.

I’ve booked whilst in SA for 20 years, this is first time it’s happened.

Yes once you have spotted problem it only takes 5 seconds to fix, but the first day it took me a minute to realise what was going on, enough to loose out. Second day only 5 seconds extra and successful

Assuming this isn’t your own private network you are using in SA (eg hotel or hotspot) I’d highly recommend a VPN. I use Surfshark (others are available) and you can usually get for a few $$$/month. You can then choose the country to VPN to which will set your location.

    It’s my private network. Thanks

But next year I’ll be ready. Only adds 5 seconds. I learnt this year a few dummy runs through to just before putting CVC in help with speed
