Arrived in Dubai 3hrs ago and used an ATM in duty free. When prompted with do I accept the fee? I declined and the machine retained my card. There goes my fee free points earning card for the whole holiday! Fortunately I have my good old trusty Halifax Clarity but sadly no points earnt directly 😉

Anybody else had a similar experience? I’ve used it many of times in Dubai with no issues.

You could add it to Google/ apple pay ?

What a pain ! Hasn’t happened to me but I don’t use ATM very much

Did leave my Santander Zero in an ATM in Bogota – one of the type that gives you the cash first – doh!

How annoying! Hope you enjoy your trip anyway. I wouldn’t go near an ATM in an airport, you just know there will be a chunky fee involved!

    Sounds like a “Lebanese Loop”.

I had this exact same experience in Spain. Went to withdraw some cash on day 1 of the holiday. Machine flashed up with an extortionate fee of 10 eur so I hit cancel.
Seems the ATM didn’t have the energy to push out the metal curve card!
I managed to add the card to Google pay and started using it. It seems that you only get a certain amount of transactions before you are required to physically put your card in and enter your PIN for it to continue working so be mindful of this. Maybe do a big cash withdrawal and then only use the card on Google pay for bigger transactions.
Curve had terrible customer service and it took me over a month to get a new card….
If you notify them of the missing card and they actually see the message they will block it though so be aware of this as well

What are they feeding these foreign ATM machines? Clearly not enough.
An ATM machine is for life, not just for Christmas!

Curve were very quick in emailing me back and said they have blocked my card and will send me a new out this time free of charge but next time will be £50.

How can I prevent an ATM from holding my card to avoid paying for a new one 🤷‍♂️
Like it was my fault I lost it!

That’s terrible! Write back and say you’ll charge THEM 50 quid if
they leave you without a card again!

I recently used my Wise card at an ATM in Thailand, where I live. There are quite frequent power cuts round my way, especially in the current high-season when every hotel is full and all the aircon is on. The power failed at exactly the wrong second, just as the cash door was about to slide back.

The fail-safe spat my card out, but the cash stayed in the machine. Of course, my account was debited.

The bank that owns the ATM will only tell me it’s not their problem.

Wise tell me it’s really the other bank’s problem.

They’ve given me a provisional refund, but if they can’t confirm the error they will take it back, and I have to wait 50 days to find out.
