Forums Frequent flyer programs British Airways Club Avios Earning Question

  • 15 posts

    Hi Everyone!

This question is in relation to Avios rather than BA.

Basically, I’m flying with my girlfriend to London from Jakarta and then back with Qatar airways.

I have a Qatar & BA membership accounts, BA Silver and Qatar Silver (Gold after the trip!).

How can I earn my girlfriends Avios? Should I just make her, her own account and transfer/join the points?

    Any help appreciated!

Short answer is you can’t earn her Avios for yourself. She would need her own membership number in either BA or QR. You can’t transfer the Avios to yourself but you could set up a family account on BA and spend them that way. BA website explains how the family account works.

You need to make an account for your GF and then add her to your household. When you use avios next it will oro rate from your account and hers (so make sure she doesn’t use her account to buy flights herself).

You will need to talk to her and agree on this. No way to just “take the avios” from someone.

Btw, you don’t have to use BA account for BA flight and Qatar for Qatar flights. While having both can help get avios points in some cases both are OneWorld and recognise each other’s status so you want to stick to one to get as many Tier Points as posible on either.

The fact you are both silver and gold means you fly enough so maybe there is a reason for your logic.

As @yonasl says BA and Qatar are both in the same alliance so unless you can easily earn and retain status in both schemes I think it’s better to have status in only one as either scheme will recognise the benefits of the other

The advantage of being a member of both is the ability to transfer Avios almost instantly between the two as although spending Avios via BA on Qatar flights is a feature of the FF scheme sometimes one scheme has better availability than the other.

Edit No further advice to offer re the initial question as both other responses give the answers

There is a weird way that would allow you to move points to your account, still need to be in a household together. see link below.

I know people are always recommending bringing others into household accounts as a way to access their points. remember it means that person can use your points too.
