I had the rare privilege of being offered a business upgrade when checking in for the LGW-DOH leg of a 4-sector return flight recently (which I accepted). The flight was not booked with BA, but through a business travel site, and I have only been awarded the Avios for the economy-equivalent flights that were booked and paid for (as you may expect).
Perhaps being grateful for the upgrade should be enough, but I was wondering if anyone else had successfully claimed the greater Avios amount (and tier points?) for travelling in the higher class, even when the upgrade was given on a complimentary basis on check-in? If so, how did you go about doing this? Was it just through the missing partner Avios claim form on the BA website? I did ensure that I kept my paper boarding pass just in case.
Any thoughts appreciated.
Put it this way … if you’d PAID at check-in for an upgrade, you would still only have got base cabin Avios and tier points.
So on that basis ….
(Upgrading in advance via the app does get you higher class Avios and TP, for clarity. If done at check-in BA simply reseats you without actually changing the travel class in your booking.)

No, I disagree – it is a question worth asking. I also suspect that you, like most of us, got hundreds of tier points and Avios for free last year when BA was accidentally giving them out on redemptions for about 8 months (my daughter got to Silver from a standing start!).

If only, had to earn them the hard way!

Do you happen to vote Tory?
Thanks guys, really insightful (and I figured that was probably the case, but always worth an ask!).

You do get the higher TP and Avios when you pay cash for an upgrade at checkin on BA. You don’t when flying on most other Oneworld airlines.
I haven’t had an upgrade from BA in 44 years unless we’re counting F cabin with J service. By contrast in *A days I got them frequently on both UA and TG. Had a decent record on LH and QF too. Any imorovenent to my comfort always gratefully received 🙂

Same here. I’m a BA Gold who has never had an upgrade on BA apart from the one time I was travelling on a booking with someone who “knew someone” in BA and magically got us both upgraded from J to F.
To be fair, 75% of my BA flights are long haul in Club with no First.
