Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

Last year I booked two flights to Greece on Avios using a 241 that was about to expire. I then had to cancel it. A few months ago I realised that although I had received a refund of the taxes, I had never got the Avios refunded.

When I complained to BA, I got a response that said that because I voluntarily cancelled my booking, I am entitled to a refund of taxes, fees and charges paid, less a reasonable service fee, but that they can’t reimburse the Avios you paid for booking.

I was under the impression, and everything I read online seems to support this, that the Avios would be refunded.

Am I correct and BA is wrong? They have subsequently ignored any further communication from me.

That’s nonsense from BA, you can cancel up to the day of travel (? or 24 hours before, but it’s very close) and should get the avios back.
    Have you called/Tweeted/tried chat?

Also – did you cancel online or by phone? Have you checked through your account thoroughly to make sure they weren’t actually refunded at some point? They can be difficult to spot, especially if you have a HHA and it takes about 6 different transactions to complete!

@NorthernLass gets to the crux of the matter.

When did you actually cancel the flight?

If within 24 hours of departure then BA is correct.
