Our third child is going to be 2 very soon so I was wondering what a good avios strategy would be for us. Based on what I have read, it seems that there aren’t many options but I thought it’s worth asking the question.
Any tips would be much appreciated!
What are you trying to do? Earn avios or spend avios? Do you have destination and dates in mind? Any idea how you want to use them?
As above, but also you can often get 5 x economy seats and there are destinations where BA often releases more than 4 x business. So it’s not hopeless but you’ll need a lot of avios! Or look at using cash for a couple of you, or combining with a BA Holiday.
A few people have asked about the BA Holiday strategy so I might start a separate thread at some point.
Just seen you seem to have 2 versions of this thread running!
Sorry, let me add a bit of context. In terms of earning or spending, it is both really as I want to earn more so that I can spend them. I have around 100K at the moment, but what I would like to know is as a family of 5, can you still extract good value from Avios if you have to always have to fly in the school holidays? If I managed to get 4 business class reward seats but then have to spend £3k on the 5th one, then to me that is probably not that good value.
For the BA holidays, I’d be interested in hearing more about that but everytime I look I find it more expensive vs booking separately.
Obviously it depends on your budget, but if you’re spending £3k (which would be at the high end of a CW seat), instead of £15k, that’s got to be good value?!
We travelled as a 3, so a bit different, but I used to reckon that if our budget was, say, £5k (fairly average for 2 weeks away in August, plenty of our friends pay this for a fortnight in a villa in the Med on Jet2), then good value was getting 2 of us to our usual destination of GCM on the 241, and the 3rd on a BA Holiday. The holiday bit (flight plus car) would work out at £2-£3k, our timeshare costs about £1k per week to run then there’s spending money on top which you have a lot of control over. So for the same price as 2 weeks in the overcrowded Med with LCC flights, we could fly in CW and have 2 weeks on a quiet, pristine white beach with world-class scuba diving for my OH.
But even in economy, you’re looking at nearly £1k return to some US cities in peak periods (especially Orlando and other big tourist spots), so there’s huge value to be had there when a RFS to Florida is 50k avios plus £150 pp (if you can go on one of the off-peak dates in the school holidays).
Also you have European destinations if you don’t have the avios for long-haul – CE to somewhere like Malaga at peak season can go as high as £1k pp or more!
As already noted, it would be easier to make suggestions if you tell us where you’d ideally like to go, as this is a huge factor in determining how likely you are to find seats and how much value you’re going to get.
