Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

Forums Frequent flyer programs The British Airways Club Avios used now, suggestions going forward?

After a successful initial points run (BAPP bonus and NHS ‘thank you’ award from covid) I’ve managed to accrue enough Avios plus BAPP voucher which we’ve used to book return from MAN-SFO later this year.

My Avios account is now empty 🙁 and have downgraded BAPP to free BA card. Also have Gold Amex which I quite like.

Just looking for ideas as to strategy going forward. Is it even worth collecting Avios as would be unlikely to earn enough for long haul business redemption in the near future anyway.

Would a European business redemption be worth it if upgraded to BAPP? Or could stick with free BA Amex as spend for companion voucher is same? Or just stick with Gold and transfer MR points to Avios?

Not particularly keen on cancelling just for sign up bonuses after 2 years as risk might not even be accepted next time.

    Thanks!

What travel would you normally do each year?
What’s the balance in this travel of work vs personal travel?
If work travel do you get a free choice of airline, hotel etc?
Are you normally travelling as, say, 2 for personal travel?

Amex MR’s best kept, for now, as MR’s until you decide which program you want to use them in. In the future that may be a program operating the avios currency, or it may be another one.

It’s only really worth using avios for short-haul flights if you’re travelling at very expensive times like school holidays.
This is especially the case if you’re starting in the regions, as you have to pay for the domestic flight, e.g. I just booked MAN-LHR-VLC for cash (as part of a BAH), as 24k avios plus £70 for 2 of us (one way) is just terrible value (and would be a poor use of the 241, if used on a return trip for 2).

So it really depends on your personal circumstances, and also if you have the time and energy to engage in the referral/SUB strategy to build your avios balance back up.

TBH normally just Europe maybe 2x year purely personal travel. My long haul this year was a nice splurge with the points I’d earned but don’t envisage having that many Avios again any time soon

Have you followed this to the letter. Inc Player 2?

Have you thought about moving all spend to Gold card and do so without incurring interest. Have boosted this months Avios? If its a one hit and run then youve done well but its very possible to keep at it but its up you ultimately.
