    This seems odd.
Cash fare for 2 adults and 1 child LHR to NCE return next July is coming in at GBP 2000.
Yet I just booked the flight using Avios – GBP 100 = 30,000 Avios.

Surely anyone can buy the Avios and still save over GBP1000?

What is the travel class, booking class and is it a one way or return fare for GBP 2000?

Economy and Return Mid July to end of July.

Nothing particularly odd, that’s how it works. Avios prices are fixed, cash prices increase – sometimes rapidly and a long way – at peak times. Picking up the guaranteed Avios seats on peak flights is always a good deal.

Yes but there may not be any avios seats available.

What would you have done if there were only 2 seats not 3 available?

That’s why I’m booking 11 months in advance, plus the LHR to NCE route has 6+ flights a day in the Summer…so plenty of availability, just shocked at the saving over the cash fare!

Those fares will not stay the same over the 11 months – it’s always interesting to regularly monitor the price of flights after you book them (or indeed via Google flights price history, although it’s not always fully accurate)

Agree – however 3 return flights for the equivalent of GBP 400 in total, pretty decent.

Or fly from LGW or LCY for half the cash price but for the same avios price.

Those cash prices ex LHR will drop in a couple of weeks.

This is a common route for us, so as you mentioned it will drop, but won’t be less than £250pp from LHR, so hence still a decent saving with Avios. Wish I had discovered the points game earlier.

Probably given the advanced booking, they are selling full-fare Y/H. It will fluctuate as supply/demand dictates, but anyone booking this far ahead really wants those flights (and BA know and charge accordingly). They are also fully flexible and refundable, and give you a good chance of bumping someone off any full flight if your plans change (depending on status). Obviously only downside is someone paying Y/H is possibly bumping off an Avios person 😉

I was also surprised that many Avios open last minute (within 1 week of departure) in both Club/Econ – again supply and demand. An empty seat has a very short shelf-life.

Oh yes, this is very common on my local route to LHR, club more so than econ. Several flights a day will have availability in the week or so before travel. Very helpful when flights to more cost effective airports are expensive.
