Forums Other Car rental Avis cashback – UK only?

  • 142 posts

    Hi folks

The current Avis Amex cashback deal states it’s for online uk based reservations only in the fine print (it’s not very upfront). Is that true, or has anyone experienced GBP transactions abroad triggering the cashback, as these things sometimes do?

If there’s a chance it will trigger, I’ll use the card with the deal, if not, I will be using a different card hence the question.

    Thanks!

Depends on country. I’ve had it trigger on US prepaid rentals. Other countries have mixed results

I done a pre payment for a pick up at Madrid, and pre paid on Avis uk.

The payment did trigger, but, a few things to note.

The exchange rate they done was terrible, in addition, because it was pre paid, the Avis site themselves weren’t making the money on the rental, so they lied on the bill at the end and said they had to refill it, and I’d asked for an extra driver to be covered, but, you don’t find this out until you get an invoice a few days later.

Also, if it’s a business rental for work, the terrible rate they’ve swapped the gbp to euro to act as a pre payment transfer on the invoice, means you’ll get less back in gbp.

All in, for £50 not worth the hassle and I would do it again, and in fact I wouldn’t use Avis / budget again because of it.

@Tw33ty just email customer services and tell them it was prepaid so there should be no additional charges, I got my $52.50 refunded within 2 days. Always takea photo of the dash showing the gas gauge and a have a receipt from a fill up within 10 miles.

This kind of think isn’t just Avis, it’s pretty much all the major franchised renters in my experience.

Worked fine for a rental in Turkiye.
Took a few days for the statement credit to land.

Same for me in the US, and the Avios one on the BAPP.
