Forums Frequent flyer programs The British Airways Club BA 241 Voucher owner not travelling on trip

  • 59 posts

I have a BA 241 voucher in my account and was hoping to use it for my mum and dad to take a trip to Sydney.

However I now realise that the voucher must have me traveling with it – is that correct? (they are in my householder account though)

If so I’m trying to think of my options, as I’ve promised I’ll be able to sort it! The trip isn’t until October 2025 so I’m hoping there is enough time to figure something out that doesn’t cost way more…

Could they open their own Amex BA Prem card and get the 241 voucher in the next few months, pooling family spend through them? Only thing is they are both retired so probably don’t meet the minimum income requirement – how strict is this?

Is there any way to make the booking under my name and change the name at a later date?

    I’m hoping someone can help.

    Many thanks

    7. The Companion Voucher will be issued in the name of the main British Airways American Express Card Account holder, who must travel on any Companion Voucher booking.

Thanks, as I now realise… So presumably my options are pretty limited?

You’ll also need a strategy to get the avios seats to SYD as it’s probably the most sought-after destination for redemptions – have you started reading up on the best ways to secure seats at T-355?

They can certainly look into applying for the BAPP, minimum income is £35k now for this card. They would probably need to spend the new £15k amount to get the voucher unless they could push £10k through by November.

I don’t know if there’s an option for you or them (or both) to apply for the Barclays avios card and get the upgrade voucher/s? These have the advantage of being useable for any traveller and if you had 2 of them the avios cost wouldn’t be much more than if you used the companion voucher.

*This is a lovely thing to do so I hope you come up with a solution!

Personally I’d look at just finding the best cash fare for 2 passengers (in business I assume?). As NL says bear in mind even if approved for a BAPP card they’ll have to spend at least £10k by late October to even be in with a chance of grabbing the seats for Oct 2025 and that assumes you have enough Avios in the HHA to book for them as even with a SUB they aren’t going to have enough Avios just from the card spend. I’d not pay more than £5k per person to fly to Australia anyway so that would just hit the £10k to get a 2-4-1. Not sure when your card anniversary is but if you paid cash on your BAPP you’d earn a voucher for you to use.

If they fly on BA you could use some Avios to offset the cost of the cash fare (not the best use of Avios but every little helps reduce the cash outlay). Or look at buying WTP and upgrading to CW with Avios. Not sure if you can do the same on Qatar Airways?

There is no WTP on QR, but another option would be to send them part of the way in economy and the rest in business. Of course this will depend on how many avios you have and the parents’ health and ability to cope with changing aircraft etc.
