Forums Payment cards Barclaycard Avios BA Barclaycard upgrade voucher with cash possible?

  • 56 posts

    Hi
I have a couple of questions regarding the upgrade voucher. I have one that is due to expire before the end of the year- I’m not going to have the opportunity to use it and so I was going to gift to my sister who is making a trip to the US – from reading on here although she is not in my household (and she has her own household) if I add her to my friends and family list I can book her flight for her and use the voucher that way?

I’ve not added her yet and I’ve just done a dummy run booking PE to JFK to get the upgrade I don’t want to use any Avios to make this booking (this is her cash fare) I just want her to use the voucher so she gets a CW seat- is this possible? Is this a phone call to customer service to make the booking?

    Thanks

Yes you can book for someone else using the voucher, but you can’t upgrade a cash fare. You would pay the PE Avios for a CW seat.

As noted, you can only use the Barclays voucher on an award booking. Unfortunately you can’t even reduce the avios and increase the cash you pay, as you can only select the max avios option. This is in contrast to the Amex companion voucher where you can choose any of the avios/cash combinations.

Thank you both – Northern lass you beat me to my next follow on question – sister has only 14k left in her Avios account after a recent splurge on reward flights so thought she could transfer me those and part pay rather than the 80k that is required for the redemption – oh well seems like we’ve come to a dead end now and the voucher will sadly expire can’t think of anything else 🙁

If you have any recent Avios earnings you can boost, there’s nothing wrong with your sister paying for that to top up your own Avios balance which you then use to buy her the reward flight. Repeat as necessary to make up the amount required.

Depends on how the maths works out compared to what she will otherwise be paying for the cash PE fare.
