Forums Frequent flyer programs British Airways Club BA flight cancelled for Easter Monday

  • 21 posts

Just got an email from BA to say my Frankfurt – LHR flight on Easter Monday at 20:40 has been cancelled, no alternative flight has been offered. The closest flight to my deperature is at 17:35. If I choose that flight from what I read I can claim £100 compensation, what I’m not clear on is if I cancel the booking am I due any compensation?

Most annoying thing about that cancellation is I had a flight on the same day with Lufthansa at 21:30 and shifted it last month to later in the year, now the Lufthansa is over 500 euros.

If you cancel the booking you get a full refund, and that ends BA’s obligation with regards to anything else (re-route, compensation etc.).

You should press for a re-route if you want to still travel. If BA insist they cannot do so, then make your own arrangements and get BA to cover it. If you are routed to travel on the next day, then you can have the nights hotel and reasonable food costs (e.g. dinner, breakfast) reimbursed but you may need to fight BA on that.

HAve you checked if any alternatives have been offered ib MMB rather than just the email as it’s not clear from your post?

On MMB it gives the me the option to rebook and I can see there are other direct flights currently both on the Monday and Tuesday, this is what is confusing me a bit to be honest. Whenever I’ve had a BA flight cancelled in the past the email I receive always rebooks me onto an alternative and in this situation there appear to be lots of them but none were mentioned in the email.

If they had rebooked me onto the first flight on the Tuesday it would be obvious to me I could claim for the extra nights accomodation, if they had rebooked me onto the 17:35 flight I could claim the £100 compensation. Now I’m not sure what compensation I can get.

For clarity I’m not after compensation for the sake of it, both BA alternative flights totally screw up my plans for the Easter Monday (although not enough to cancel the weekend away) but paying 500 euros to Lufthansa for their late night Monday night flight isn’t really an option.

If you choose an earlier flight you get full EU compensation of 250 euros, not £100.

At the moment my priority would be picking the least worst option in terms of maintaining the weekend away. If that’s a flight on Tuesday (and it dosen’t have to be the first one out) with a nights hotel on BA then book that. If it’s the earlier flight on the Monday then book that.

I really can’t remember the compensation amount on taking the earlier flight with earlier and arrival over the original schedule over the Tuesday one. I’m sure others will chime in on that aspect.

Thanks for the replies, appreciate it. I’ve gone for the earlier Monday flight option, there only seemed to be 6 seats left on it and as I couldn’t see any flights on other airlines that didn’t cost the earth didn’t want to risk the ealier BA flight selling out. Still not sure why BA didn’t automatically rebook me.

BA culled our Hamburg flight next week. Went into MMB and was offered both the one five hours before and the one five hours later. Not keen on a 7.15am departure but the €1,000 of EC261 will soften the blow …..
