    Me and the wife flying cx economy HKG-LHR cash ticket lowest bucket fare

    Im gold wife silver , do cx ever block seats for elite members at all , hoping to snag a row of 3 just for 2 of us … we have selected D and F middle row of 3 , hoping middle seat might be empty

    You should be able to see on expertflyer if the middle seat is blocked for you.

    Gold won’t get you a middle seat blocked. It is good your wife is silver as CX requires each passenger to have status for seat selection.

    My main recommendation for CX Economy would be to make sure you fly on the 350 and not the 777 (both 3-3-3 but a massive difference in seat width)

    Thanks for help well when I did the seat selection the middle seat was empty I’ve gone to check now and it’s showing as occupied in the seat map on cx websire however there are plenty of seats available to select on the flight

    Do u think it’s been blocked or has someone chosen to sit in thag seat when there are lots still available

    Flight is on the a350 on Saturday 11ish in the morning

    You will always be able to change with the person and maybe get window and middle (you can easily move in and out even with the aisle seat occupied.

    If you’re hoping to pull that hack then don’t do it in forward rows. Most people and a lot of seating algorithms will tend to fill from the front. That’s a lot of people’s natural inclination too for several reasons including BA running out of meal choices at Row #2 as experience to make everyone want to be in a Row as far forward as possible on any flight.

    Pick a row towards the back. Decide if you want the higher risk of picking a block on either side instead of the middle block (less desirable so lower risk of all seats getting filled), if there is any middle block. If the plane is full of course and your trick doesn’t work then a middle block is worse if full.

    I think the only way you’d find out if that middle seat is occupied or blocked is to call the airline and they might not tell you. If you’re worried you could ask/see if you could switch again. But everything could change until you check in and very very rarely sometimes even after that.

    I have had a couple refuse to swop when I had been allocated the seat between them! They still wanted to keep the window and the aisle.

    I’ve had middle seat blocked for me on a recent flight to Istanbul which was almost full (checked on expertflyer beforehand) and I’m only Silver, so for sure it’ll happen for Golds.

    CX doesn’t fly to Istanbul

    Empty middle seat is an unpublished BA benefit and even then not guaranteed even for golds.

    So I fail to see how you are so certain it will happen on a completely different airline.

    I didn’t say it always happens, obviously if the plane is full you won’t get it, but I’m giving anecdotal evidence that it does happen.

    @simonjones
    the middle seat is E and is currently showing as occupied, not blocked, hope that helps.

    the 350 and not the 777 (both 3-3-3 but a massive difference in seat width)

    Cathay, like most B777 operators, have a 3-4-3 config in economy for their B777 these days, A350 is a 3-3-3 config. The B777 has a wider cabin than the A350, but not enough so with the extra seat each seat is narrower as you say, 18″ on the A350, 17.2″ on the B777.

    True, my last flight was 2 years ago and forgot that detail. The 3-4-3 vs 3-3-3 makes a massive difference in seat width. Avoid the 777 unless it is for a short flight where it may make less of a difference.

    @ deek thanks for checking , not sure why someone would of picked a middle seat on a row of 3 … will have ask them if they will swap on board or wait and check seat map tomorrow abs re – select

    Lots of seats available to assign seems strange but that’s my risk to take

    I’m always interested in how accurate sites like expertflyer are, so if you get the chance could you please keep us updated as to what actually happened on the flight? Thanks!

    Probably auto assigned, our corporate travel system sometimes makes questionable seating choices if it allocates when you book!

    In my observation Cathay Pacific doesn’t do automatic seat blocking like BA but they do look after their Emerald passengers well so could be worth asking at check in or the lounge if they can block a seat for you in a row of 3. Looks like a busy but not full flight in Economy

    @Deek
    Expertflyer is linked to the airline systems and for most airlines will be 100% accurate. The only time it isn’t in my experience is if the flight is operating out of an airport that is in person check in only on their local system – a few BA flights from European stations operate like this – then the seat map won’t update in real time during the final hours before the flight.

    (There is also a quirk for Turkish airlines I’ve noticed in advance in the past that the exit rows show occupied but are actually available for sale – doesn’t apply to CX!)

    .

    Your giving an anecdote that it happens on BA. Which it undoubtedly does.

    But the OP isn’t flying BA they are flying Cathay!

    Just taken first flight on CX in economy on the a350 HKG-LHR cash ticket , BA gold member

    First class CX lounge was amazing , the Pier , our flight was from gate 64 so right opposite , managed to get the foot massage too.

    The middle seat was empty , not sure if it was blocked or just happened to be empty , very happy … didn’t ask at check in or in lounge . flight was 90% full in economy

    Purser in economy and flight manager both personally said hello which was nice , purser was before take off and cabin manger after. Champagne was offered before take off too .. never had any of this on BA . Purser throughout flight kept asking if I needed anything … very good service infact all the crew were nice to all passengers . Both purser and manager came and said thank you just before landing too .. Defo would fly coach on CX again
