Forums Frequent flyer programs British Airways Club BA Holidays – new rules sigh

    Hey everyone

Would appreciate some guidance. Despite my anger at the changes since I am gold until September I am going to stick with BA during the next few months to see how much I do actually spend and also how the changes shake out as everything becomes clear.

So first thing I need to figure out is a holiday I was going to go on end March/early April to Dubai (well Abu Dhabi but will have to fly to Dubai now. I am going to book reward flights with a companion voucher, so my first clarification is I believe I am correct that (via phoning up) I can book a holiday even with reward flights? Next question is on dates. If my holiday is 31st March (arriving 1st) to 7th and I book 6 nights accommodation (1st – 6th) will I get the tier points for what I spend on the hotel, even if the holiday starts in March? Or can I not leave before the 1st to have it count? Any ideas?

You might be able to add a hotel to a points booking (not sure of that though) but even if you could it wouldn’t make it a BA holiday which are cash only.

You can’t mix avios and cash bookings of any kind.

You could, however book 2 hotels, or hotel plus car and that counts as a BAH, although whether it would earn any TPs under the new scheme is unclear. It’s entirely possible that BA’s IT won’t be able to differentiate if it’s programmed to look at spend only!

Hmmmmmmm interesting, when I phoned up to book a reward flight in December the agent wanted to add a hotel to make it into a holiday, that’s why I assumed it was possible.
If this isn’t an avenue that can be used then the little chance I had of getting status is indeed gone…….😞

You can logically add a hotel to a reward flight booking AFTER the flight has been booked, as indeed you can with any BA flight booking. This may be what was being suggested to you.

However that does not make it a BA Holidays package so never qualified for any extra discounts and won’t qualify for tier points under the new regime.

I suppose an agent might be able to manually add a hotel booking to the PNR of an award flight, but as noted, it wouldn’t make it a BAH.

Thanks very much – yet another reason to look for alternative reward schemes once my gold has expired…….

Thinking about this, are you sure the agent wasn’t just trying to persuade you to book a hotel in addition to the flights? I’ve noticed the last couple of times I’ve had to call to do something which can’t be done online, the agent said something like “Are you all sorted with your accommodation”, to which I replied in the affirmative and speedily ended the call!

Very well could have been – they did use the term holiday but that may have been a bit of a smokescreen of course! And yes that time I did the same…….

I believe flight-only and BAH are separate entities. As others have mentioned, adding a hotel to a flight does not make this a BAH and you wouldn’t get the additional benefits of it being a BAH, e.g. low deposit, ATOL protection etc. It seems it’s an agent trying to upsell accommodation.

When you add another element to a flight booking it does become a BAH (albeit not one qualifying for double TP etc) and depending on how/when you add another element to the flight it maybe technically offer the additional benefits of a package holiday or linked travel arrangement.
