Apologies if there is already a thread on the BA shopping portal, but couldn’t find it from searching!
So I had rather weird exchange with BA shopping portal people. I had bought something from John Lewis and noticed the extra avios hadn’t been awarded, when I filed the claim I sent the vat invoice JL sent me as I was in rush and it seemed easy to quickly download and attach. They took a month to respond and then gave me some extra avios but only for the amount minus VAT. When I queried this they pointed to terms and conditions that avios are only awarded for the amount minus VAT?!?? This is news to me as generally when something is awarded it is for the total price. We don’t live in the US so prices are never listed minus VAT/sales tax. It strikes me as a very odd policy from BA and rather misleading, given most people would assume the extra avios you get from using the link from the shopping portal would be for the total spent.
The last few transactions I have had Avios only paid on the net figure ie excluding VAT
Their terms clearly state that the avios may be awarded on the amount ex taxes/VAT, shipping etc. It does seem to be random whether that is applied however.
It’s clear that Avios are only awarded on the pretax amount as the retailer obviously doesn’t want to pay any commission/finders fee on VAT it has to pay away to the Exchequer. You do benefit when you shop with retailers that either don’t have the systems to sort this out or have sufficiently high margins that they don’t particularly care.

That’s not my experience at all, until when I queried what was missing this time and I sent evidence that included a breakdown. Most of the time BA can’t know the breakdown of the VAT, especially as depending on what you have purchased it is not always the same nor easily clear what it would be.
