Forums Frequent flyer programs British Airways Club BA to allow upgrade bids (TLFL from FT)

I’ve used this successfully on other airlines as I expect plenty of people have. I suppose “BA IT” has plausibly been the reason why not to date. But who knows for sure.

Finally catching up with the rest of the market but only on BA/Iberia mixed metal bookings that’s niches as hell.

It could be good once it rolls out to BA metal only.

There’s a lot coming with the new IT platform, but most of it isn’t stuff you’ll like – eg charging for large cabin baggage, which can’t be done on the current platform.

And given BA don’t even let business class passengers choose a seat early unless they have status, I’m sure some of these changes will even affect people at the pointy end of the aircraft.

Well, anything that offers greater benefits for status and more particularly clamps down (by charging) on the ludicrous quantities of cabin baggage people insist on carrying can only be good.

But @JDB, if we don’t take all this cabin baggage where will we all put our breakfast PJs, our sports-leisure daytime wear, and our ripped jeans and oversized hoodie combo (hood up, obvs) for posh dinner dates?

Not to mention all the coke, crisps and biscuits pilfered from the lounge?!

Plus the full bottles of grey goose of course

Well I guess at least the tattoos aren’t taking up any extra space.

A cabin bag being included is pretty much the only advantage BA has on short haul over the low costs.

If everything ends up being linked to silver+ status, what reason would anyone without the status have to pay more to fly to europe with BA when the low costs are often a lot cheaper?

Low cost carriers aren’t always that cheap when you add up all the extras – ‘low cost’ refers to the company’s low cost operating model rather than the fares they charge. If someone wants to take silly amounts of hand luggage that slows down security and boarding, then they should pay for that inconveniencing of others as a means of changing behaviour. I’m of an age and of sufficient economic means that I really don’t want to be squished in a middle seat and have a generally uncomfortable experience travelling Ryanair, Wizz, easyJet etc. There are plenty of others like me. BA has a great many faults but flying with them from Heathrow (which suits me and many others) is an overall better experience and Club, in my view, offers very good value if you value comfort. If none of that applies, then of course LCCs are a great option for many.

People criticise BA for being so parsimonious in its short haul service offering but they realistically have no option. It’s not profitable, the competition is intense so they can’t charge realistic fares and the circumstances in which European airlines operate vs USA, ME or Asia mean that probably won’t change.

Funnily enough, having flown easyJet out from EDI-MAD recently for my cousin’s stag, and flown BA Club back from LHR-GLA (having gone MAD-LHR on IB to treat myself to a long haul seat on the daily A350 they operate) I’d say my seat on the easyJet leg was more comfortable than on BA (granted I’d paid for an exit row.)
