Forums Frequent flyer programs British Airways Club Baggage allowance on American Airlines

  • 10 posts

I have an unused credit note with American Airlines for a cancelled US internal flight last year. As it is going to expire this year I was considering a return flight to US on Basic Economy which doesn’t include checked baggage. I am BA Silver and I had heard that some partner airlines will allow you a baggage allowance based on your partner airline status. Anyone have any experience of this? (I know BA itself won’t)
I have tried to call American Airlines to check but on hold forever.
    Thanks
    Joseph

Only just seen this or would have replied sooner. My understanding is that only AA’s own elites have a free baggage allowance on their Basic Economy fares.

From AA’s web-site it looks as if One World Sapphire frequent flyers are treated like their own Platinum members, so it looks as if you should get free checked baggage.

BA’s page for AA’s baggage policy seems to confirm this

Thanks for that – I agree that document does suggest that my interpretation is incorrect.

Where this all gets messy is around the different rules for the various basic fares offered by the Atlantic JB members and baggage and other privileges are to some extent also dependent upon who is marketing and who is operating the flight with further different rules for AA’s domestic flights. There is a dedicated thread on Flyertalk on the subject which does a very good job of explaining it but still manages to leave me baffled!

Not done it recently but in 2019 I took a domestic AA flight on a basic economy ticket and as BA silver was able to check in 2 bags for free and was able to select a ‘main cabin extra’ seat free of charge.
