Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points
@SamG – Bali is, as you say, a beautiful place with wonderful people yet the authorities have allowed it to be overdeveloped to a ridiculous level. We were lucky enough to go to Bali for the first time on our honeymoon almost 29 years ago and there were ba fraction of the hotels, beaches and surrounding and countryside unspoilt, temples remained quiet and spiritual, more wildlife and in Ubud you were more likely to see buffalo of other animals in the street than cars. We have been back since and the seeds of destruction were being sown and it now all sounds rather awful. It’s tragic also that influencers and digital nomads have caused so much damage to Bali. Vietnam is going the same way.
Things were different ‘back in the day’ because international travel was unaffordable for many people.
Luckily, many people now have the opportunity to explore the world, but with that comes the problems described.
Firstly, I’ve changed my plans and I will no doubt keep changing them.
So far, Indigo at Seminyak for 4 nights, Element at UBUD for 4 nights and then Hyatt Regency at Sanur with the club lounge before flying back on Qatar.
Now for the actual reason why I’ve started posting. Right, I’ve done a fair bit of research and the concensus from various forums appears to be that the traffic is horrific, there are tourists everywhere and the beaches are mediocre at best.
Additionally, the queues can be terrible at the airport and UBUD is now like the M25.
The wife is now telling me a strict strategy that we have to adhere to so me and her, and more importantly the baby don’t get “bali belly”. I think that involves some tablets beforehand, but don’t quote me on that.
I had my doubts Alittle beforehand but I am now seriously beginning to think if there is actually any point in going. I did ask her about Vietnam last night but the last time we went there in November, we were stuck with the worst typhoon they had for 30 years so she isn’t overly keen on that either.

You’re my vanguard – you need to go!
My own ever evolving plan for Indonesia has been updated to simply sit in Ubud at the Element for 10 nights (day trips to the beach if needed, traffic depending obviously).
Won’t be staying anywhere else in Bali, but that may change depending on your scouting report should you still go.
Actually why are we talking on this thread when there is a de facto master thread out there? This is supposed to be a thread about visas!
