We’re planning to stay in Bangkok and Chiang Mai either side of a beach break in Hua Hin, at the end of May/start of June. The array of hotel options is pretty bewildering (especially in Bangkok, and especially having been to neither before, only through). We won’t be bowling around doing a tonne of stuff – we mainly want to relax, have some good food, see a couple of interesting things, and keep the kids busy. It would be ideal if we can walk to places rather than have to get taxis.
We have two children aged 6 and 2 years old, and would like to have one room/suite that houses us all rather than 2 separate rooms.
We have status as follows (presumably mainly relevant for Bangkok): IHG Diamond/Ambassador, Hilton Gold (assuming soft landing from Diamond), Marriott Gold. Our budget is maximum £200 a night – or we have plenty of points in all three.
Any recommendations or sweet spots gratefully received! Thank you.
In Bangkok, I like the sunset sky bar experience at the top the skyscraper hotels, you can just go for a cocktail or a meal, you may need an excellent child minding service though.
We’ve visited a few time with that age (and will be in Hua Hin in Aug.!).
The Sheraton Grande has possibly the best pool for small kids as it’s not really pool-shaped (see webpage!). Also,
the pool bar serves kid-type food so you don’t ever need to leave the area, and there’s a lot of shade. It’s not really walking distance to anything famous, but it DOES have a directly overhead tunnel to a) the metro, and b) Terminal 21 mall, with loads more food options, room to run round and be noisy if it’s raining, and a large supermarket for all those surprise things you’ve forgotten.
Another option would be the Millennium Hilton — you’ll get a massive room, and as you’re not in a rush, the daily (very easy) boat shuttle on the river would actually be fun for the kids.
Also check out Oriental Residence on Wireless Road. Convenient for the park with play things, boats and lizards to keep the kids entertained. For a chain option then probably the new Staybridge Sukhunvit would meet your needs and represent good value at around 14-16k IHG points per night. Bangkok is too huge, busy and scattered to be walkable so you will find taxi or grab car modt useful with kids. Better still, hire a driver guide by the day to make a new friend, dhow you both the local and tourist city, all in a stress-free way.
tourwithtong.com for Bangkok, have used a couple of times, driver with a nice aircon minivan and a tour guide. They can do your airport transfers etc too
Elephant Nature Park in Chiang Mai
+1 for the Millenium Hilton, 3 seperate weekend stays there last October ( albeit not with kids ) and they looked after us very well. As said above the free river taxi is handy and runs several times per day, some folks just stay on for the return trip back to hotel. You can also get free boat from the ICON SIAM mall ( walking distance from hotel ) over to Asiatique IIRC.
I really liked the ICON SIAM mall ( and i dont enjoy those places normally ) there is kids stuff on one of the levels.
Went to Chiang Mai also during same trip, stayed at Aksara Heritage ( within the city walls ) walking distance to Thae Pae gate.
Saw a few kids about by pool and at breakfast but i dont know if they have family rooms as such.
Incidentally, taxi prices are good, we missed our coach transfer from Bangkok to ferry port for Koh Tao, staff at Millenium Hilton sorted a taxi for us, around a 4 hour journey cost equivalent of £100 ( hope the driver got a return job…. )
Chiangmai is a small town, the opposite of Bangkok. Le Meridian is in the centre and is walkable to a few places including markets. But it might be better to look for bigger hotels in suburbs that have more space for kids. Taxis aren’t expensive.
Not part of a chain but would highly recommend The Sukhothai in BKK. Beautiful pool area, excellent breakfast, and traditional Thai style/service set on vast piece of land with plenty of space for the children to run around.
Be aware lots of the hotel pools in BKK (eg COMO Metropolitan, SO Bangkok) don’t get much sunlight for large part of the day so do check if that’s important.
