Has anyone had any luck with Amex retention offers for the BAPP recently?
Yesterday, I got the standard 10000 bonus avios points offer with a £3k spend in next 3 months. I asked if there were any other offers, there wasn’t.
I got offered only 5000 for 1k spend in 3 months. The agent (chat on the app) was upfront and said no others available. Seems they are becoming a little less generous.
Seems they are becoming a little less generous.
Shame – with the substantial SUB currently being offered, you’d hope they might sweeten the pot for existing cardholders?
I may as well cancel mine, and start the 2 year countdown for my next SUB eligibility.
Did anyone ever received multiple retention offers within the same anniversary year? Just before Xmas a friend of mine with a BAPP was told that only one retention offer per year (per customer/card) can be made?
Downgraded to the blue BA amex card today from BAPP, no mention of a retention offer. But I’m happy with 2for1 voucher in the bank and saving most of the £250 annual fee
Can I ask here… I’ve just tried to close my BAPP, and Amex told me in their disclosure that this would invalidate my earned 2-4-1 vouchers, as apparently I have to redeem the voucher and pay for the taxes with the card that it was earned with. Is this true?! I’m certain I’ve closed cards in the past, and vouchers have stayed valid…. But this was before the ‘new’-style 2-4-1 vouchers. Do I seriously have to pay another £250 this year, just to keep last-year’s voucher valid?! Surely that can’t be the case.

Amex has to tell you that so that if/when their policy is amended to reflect the terms, you will have no comeback. However, almost everyone here will tell you that, from historical/practical experience your voucher is safe following cancellation or downgrade of your BAPP.

Hmm, okay – thanks for the reference point. I’m sure I read somewhere in a HfP article recently too, that this is not the case – and that vouchers are safe once the card has been cancelled. I haven’t been able to find the article though – so I’m going to do some more searching. Wonder if anyone else on the forums are able to share from experience whether this is actually the case.

please read this recent article – https://www.headforpoints.com/2023/01/16/how-do-british-airways-american-express-2-4-1-vouchers-work/ – you can use any Amex, but must be an Amex. as per JDB you should read the t&c’s of the product and understand there is a risk that things may change in the future, but at present not an issue in practice.
One thing to note is once you’ve booked your 241 redemption, if you want to amend the booking – change the dates, destination, class etc, then you may find you need the Amex card you made the booking on.
This is where Amex could help themselves a bit.
My use case is that I want to use a 2-4-1 every 2-3 years. In between I’m happy to keep restocking Avios and earning brownie points with the baby-sitters/in-laws.
I have no problem paying a full year’s fee to earn a voucher, even if I might earn it in 7-8 months. However, after earning a voucher that is valid for two years, it should be acceptable (within the terms and conditions) to “downgrade” to the free card and book the flights using the “free” card if it were available.
I would personally pay a lower fee (say £100) for an intermediate product which retains the higher earning rate of the Premium Plus, without earning another voucher which I wouldn’t use. Currently, I’m using the Amex PRG which is doing a similar thing, giving us bonus MRs for spending extra.
I would prefer it, if this lower fee was the norm and you could “opt-in” to pay for a voucher for (say £150) at any point within your card year, once you have spent the required amount.
With this arrangement, I’m far less likely to churn or switch between cards and stick with one product- especially if there was some kind of loyalty bonus, set at a rate lower than a sign-up bonus, but high enough to discourage churn.
Presumably this might not be good for Amex?, I guess BA profit from Amex buying vouchers from them which go on to be unspent and BA would increase the internal cost of a voucher with Amex if Amex were buying fewer vouchers.
Cancelled BA Blue today, I was offered double Avios (2 for every £!) for 3 months. Slightly tempted, but didn’t.
Same as a few of the above posts, 5k Avios for £1k spend in the next 3 months. Bit of a shame they wouldn’t offer more, have a large wedding payment to make just a month before renewal.
I was offered and accepted the 10,000 bonus avios for £3k spend in 3 months yesterday.
When they make these offers do they confirm them by email, add a tracker to your account or confirm them in any way?
@BJ no they don’t add a tracker, I asked this on the chat and they said that it won’t show on the Amex app or on your online account, but you can call to check the spend progress within the e.g. 3 month period. I just took screenshots of the Amex chat and the date the chat agent said my spend would commence on (today) so that I have proof if there are any issues.
Received and accepted 10k for 3k spend in 3 months today, via chat.
@Rob Can this thread be merged with the one below?
https://www.headforpoints.com/forums/topic/amex-bapp-retention-offers/Seems wasteful to have the data points spread over two threads.
I was on chat 1hr ago with Amex looking to cancel my BAPP and I was told i need to call to cancel my card, can’t be done over chat. Should i try with another agent?
Do you ask directly for a retention offer? I remember cancelling my BAPP just before the pandemic and no retention offer was made.I was on chat 1hr ago with Amex looking to cancel my BAPP and I was told i need to call to cancel my card, can’t be done over chat. Should i try with another agent?

BA PP retention offer today and was 10,000 avios spending £3000 in 90 days. Accepted
How close to the renewal date have you guys been asking?
In case it helps anyone, I was able to check the value of my spend to date to hit my “spend £3k in 3 months to earn 10,000 Avios as a retention offer” via a quick message exchange on Amex chat (the original chat agent had told me I would need to call)

My year runs dec-dec, asked today. Said cost of living and all that and just wanted to justify the fee , preempted the offer to downgrade to the free card saying thats not really what I wanted and asked if there was any reason to keep the card. Said I had other cards and was gonna call them all and have a cull somewhere.
Was offered the 10000 avios for £3000 spend in 90 days deal. I will be spending £2400 tomorrow, hence the call today 😀
