Forums Payment cards American Express BA Premium Plus sign up bonus

I’ve had a BAPP for several years with my wife as a supplementary card holder and receive the 2-4-1 voucher every year (anniversary date is end of April). Having hit the £10,000 target already this year we were going to apply for my wife to have her own card, with me as a supplementary cardholder and switch our spending to that to then try and earn two vouchers each year.

The current sign up bonus is 26,000 miles (with a referral link giving me 9,000). However seeing the 70,000 bonus from last Feb is a bit of a kicker that we didn’t do it earlier! (Our own fault of course…) I believe 25,000 sign up bonus is the standard for BAPP – is that correct?

Thanks to this wonderful forum, I just received a 10,000 miles for £3,000 spend retention offer on my account as well. So now thinking about holding off on applying for the new card until early 2024 when there may be a bigger sign up offer? Does anyone know whether there usually is a bigger sign up offer once a year (maybe not as much as 70,000 but I think mine might have been 50,000 several years ago)?

I think that 70k was a one-off unfortunately! Amex themselves were only offering 35k at the time, but the 70k was exclusively on BA’s website.

I think it was 40k last year at one point. If you’re in no rush, then maybe wait until there’s an enhanced bonus on the BAPP?

There is of course an enhanced bonus on the Gold currently until tomorrow, so you could refer her for that, if she’s eligible for the bonus (had no Amex in her name in the last 2 years)? If she took the Gold, she would still be eligible for the BAPP bonus (provided she had no BA Amex in the last 2 years in her own name).

Enhanced SUBs seem to go in cycles, there was BAPP earlier this year, then Plat, and now Gold. When one ends, another one seems to come around.

Thanks for the reply. My only concern with applying for the gold card first is if my wife potentially gets turned down in a few months for the BAPP card because she already has the gold card. The voucher is what we really want (as a family of 4) although the additional bonus miles would definitely help!

Hi, newbie here but as far as I’m aware the gold card is a rewards card whereas the BAPP card is an avios card – i believe you can hold both within a 24m period and be eligible for the welcome bonus from both because they are classed as different types of card.
This means you could benefit from the welcome rewards bonus on the gold card and then cancel and take out the BAPP card and still earn the avios welcome bonus on that card.
Caveat – this is my understanding but you may want to double check yourself.

In a similar boat myself – we didnt take the BAPP card in feb beacuse we were committed to getting the barclaycard bonus. Now we’ve completed that mission and want a BAPP but I am holding out for maybe 40 /50k joining bonus. I havent been playing the avios game long enough to know how often such offers come around…

if i were to apply for a new card today and cancel it before Oct 1st, would i still get a pro rata refund? I am guessing maybe not, since the new card will not have any pro rata refunds mentioned in the T&C. Does anyone know for sure?

Sadly, the gold and free BA Amex cards exclude you from getting the SUP bonus on BAPP and platinum. You need to be 24m without a personal Amex to qualify. Except, if you have only held a BAPP, you qualify for the plat bonus, and vice verse. Biz plat different rules again. Lots of links about this subject for you to search.

Rob himself said last year’s 70k will not happen again as AMEX and BA probably had some stern talks. Never considered BAPP until then but me and wife signed up. As newbies it was well timed.
