Barclaycard Avios Plus Mastercard quick downgrade

Hi there, first post, easy question!

So, if I receive a Barclaycard Avios Plus Mastercard and spend £3000 in the first month, and then immediately downgrade to the free card. Do I still receive the 25K Avios. Does the statement need to be issued (with £20 fee). Or can I pay it off in full, receive the 25K Avios without paying the £20 fee? It’s only £20, but good to know! Thanks!

After spending the 3k wait until the bonus is in your BAEC account. You may or may not be charged the £20. Mine took around 2 months to give me the option to downgrade to basic card on the app, some people took 2-3 months. So bear that in mind.
One positive is you can get a upgrade voucher from the Barclays Avios Plus when you spend 10k then after youve downgraded you can get another upgrade voucher on free one (after 20k) right after unlike AMEX BA thats solely, once per year.

@zapato1060 do u remember when you did this to reset the earning cycle? I did this last year and it was all good but now I noticed that it states new rewards available from x date (pre upgrade). Obviously not keen on upgrading just yet if the spend won’t count towards the new voucher.

Oh wow, this triggered memories of the awful early months of this card.
Which reminds me, some of us must be due for the SUB again from possibly next month.

It was a shambles wasn’t it?! But I ended up getting all my fees refunded as compo, then downgraded and got another voucher, so it’s not worked out so bad.

@YC, my spend resets from the month I downgraded so not sure why your account is showing that. But Barclays IT may be the answer!

can anyone remember / know how long the process of downgrading take and whether a new card is issued with a different number on it… I am thinking of downgrading but dont want to get stuck without a barclaycard card I can use during the change of cards

yes you will get a new card with a new number but you should be able to carry on using your existing card until the new one arrive.

I don’t recall well, but I seem to think after I clicked downgrade, they downgrade you at the end of the ‘month’ instead of pro rata refund your monthly fee.

I’ve upgraded/downgraded a few times…

When you click the downgrade button, your account will automatically change from Barclaycard Avios Plus to the standard Avios within 24 hours after your next statement date. The £20 fee will be charged on the day of your statement and refunded the next day. A new card will be ordered with a new card number, but your existing card will continue to work while you’re waiting for this.

Your annual spend target (now £20k) will reset 2 days after your statement date.

E.g
– Request to change to Avios Plus to Avios Standard on 10th March
– Next statement issued 13th March
– £20 fee charged on 13th March
– Account converts to free card on 14th March and new card issued
– £20 fee refunded on 14th March
– Spend target updated 15th March
