Hi everyone.
I got the barclaycard avios plus card and quickly hit the requirements for the upgrade voucher and replaced it with the normal free avios card.
I’ve got a big spend coming up, if i were to upgrade back to the plus card… I understand I’ll not get the bonus but would my counter be reset for another upgrade? It’s cheeky but does it work?
You’ll get the voucher for spend on the free card, so depending on how big the spend is you’ll get two vouchers in one year anyway.
Does the option to upgrade show in your app? That’s the only way you’d be allowed to upgrade anyway, but as above maybe you don’t need to.
Ah yes. But the free card is 20k a year for the upgrade and plus is 10k?
Yep, hence “depending on how big your spend is”. I’ve definitely had two vouchers in one card year, once on Plus once on Free.
Twice on Plus though… Not sure. I don’t think you’d even have the option to upgrade though?
I can confirm I’ve triggered two vouchers in the same year one for the plus card another after downgrade. After triggering the 2nd, the ‘change to a different card’ option repopulated, but noticeably with the plus option not available. So I think the only chance to re-trigger a plus voucher is to cancel, wait 6 months and then re-apply.
Upgrade to the Plus for me shows up now, now my card year has reset.

Does the first 10k spent on plus card count towards the 20k target?

No. I earned a voucher at £10k for the plus card, then downgraded and my counter reset to £0, and was given a new 12 month target to hit the £20k. I then hit the £20k spend less than 12 months from when I opened the Plus card, thus earning 2 vouchers in 1 year.

Can confirm this happened to me too.
Also I’ve had the option to upgrade back to the plus card for a few months, complete with a 5k Avios bonus.

Good point re the 5k bonus, hadn’t spotted that til you mentioned it. Makes it an easier decision really once the year resets as that’ll cover 2.5 months of fees, during which time can spend to hit the lower voucher threshold and earn 1.5x. Think I’ll upgrade to see if can get 2 vouchers again this year. All in the hope that at the 3 month mark the downgrade option shows again!
Other way round for me, I hit the 20k spend for basic card, earned the ‘upgrade’ voucher and then upgraded to the Plus card, but the spend counter has not reset, it’s saying that a new reward is not available until next year.
But I’ve only recently upgraded. Does it take a while to reset after upgrading?
Thanks
