Forums Payment cards Barclaycard Avios Barclays Upgrade Voucher expiry

  • 1,144 posts

When you reach the £10,000 on your Barclays card you are given the option to pick 7,000 avios or an upgrade voucher.

You don’t need to make a choice immediately.

I now got my voucher as my year elapsed. The voucher I have been given expires in 24 months.

So basically, if you don’t need it, just wait and you will get the voucher at your year end and will have more time to redeem it.

Yes it’s quite a neat little Barclays feature with the plethora of vouchers to coordinate, despite being an inferior voucher both in terms of usability (ie cannot redeem 2 online) and poor value for SH (vs BAPP). Amex would get significantly more transactions through BAPP if they introduced this.

When your collection year ends, does the voucher not issue with a 2 year expiry starting from when you hit the £10k/£20k spend within the card year?

E.g. year runs 1 Jan – 31 Dec. Spend £10,001 by 3 April. Then, on 31 Dec, voucher issues with 3 April start date?

(This seems ridiculous, but wouldn’t put it past Barclays IT)

*Edit: apologies, just realise you were letting us know you got a voucher with 2 years validity from your year-end, rather than asking if that’s what happened. Ignore me.

Does it issue the voucher by default at the end of the year if you haven’t made a choice, or do you have to make the choice before the end of the year?

Unfortunately, I picked my choice ages ago and am about to hit the target, would have preferred to do what you suggested and waited till my year ended.

Wait, nevermind, I just checked and no option is selected, I think I was looking at my BC yearly reward one that’s been ticked. Nice one, will keep my current one unchecked as its about to reach the spend target today

False. Most certainly can redeem two online on the same booking.

Thanks for sharing this trick with the wider group here.

Can I check if this works in the same manner to extend the voucher earned from the Premier account? So if I haven’t selected a voucher or 7k Avios option by the anniversary date of the Premier account, can I request for a voucher at a date which is well past the anniversary date in order to extend its validity?

No, if you haven’t made a selection of points/voucher at the date of your Premier anniversary, you will automatically receive the voucher at that date.

My BA annual upgrade voucher (from Barclays Premier + avios offering) posted yesterday, 6 October 2023 with an expiry date of 1 August 2025, which is not 24 months.

Trawling the forum I can’t see this problem anywhere else. Has this happened to anyone? What was the resolution.

    Bit more on this:

    The email from BA states:

“A Cabin Upgrade Voucher will be valid for 24 months from the date of issue which will be visible in the e-Voucher section of your British Airways Executive Club account”. (British Airways Executive Club <ExecutiveClub@crm.ba.com>)

The agent in the chat is already trying to fob me off, referring me back to Barclays. Is the agent correct?

agent: “Andrew since the voucher is issued by Barclays then please be informed that the voucher’s validity cannot be amended from our end. The third party is only responsible to the expiry or validity of the voucher issued by them”

Someone else posted this a few days ago.

I replied to that thread as mine also has been issued with 1st August 2025 expiry date. I’ve not taken any action yet as I will likely use it before then anyway, but will try to get it sorted if someone else posts how they did it.

Update: BA customer services say that “The BA team are the ones who issue the voucher therefore they are the ones who issue the expiry date not Barclays”

This has already been reported by some in this thread – https://www.headforpoints.com/forums/topic/upgrade-voucher-issued-with-less-than-2-years-expiry/
