Forums Other Destination advice Best Caribbean destination for small B&B hotels

  • 25 posts

My wife and I (60s/70s age group) are considering a 10 or 14-night Caribbean holiday next spring. Not looking for a large all inclusive resort hotel. Would prefer a smaller hotel, possibly family run on a B&B basis. Main requirements would be not too expensive, easy (maybe direct) access to a nice beach, plenty of evening meal options within walking distance, room with a sea view, some touristy points of interesting once we’ve had enough of the beach. Possibly would hire a car for a few days.

Do such hotels in the Caribbean exist? If so, should I be concentrating my search on any specific islands/destinations (or excluding any islands from my search)?

    Grateful for any advice.

Yes, take a look at Shades in Barbados which gets astonishing tripadvisor reviews. More of a self catering place but food can be arranged. I also know the owner (it’s the family that makes the place special) and would be happy to put you in touch.

Nigel, many thanks. Shades in Barbados does indeed look very good and would suit our needs well. Unfortunately, reward flight availability (on BA.com) in business for the return flight , even with a 241 voucher, is non-existent for the entire Jan, Feb, March, Apr period.

I will set a Seatspy alert keep checking availability on BA.com in the hope that something comes up.

Where we are now on Grand Turk doesn’t have any big resorts just small independent B&Bs and hotels. You can easily fly here from Providenciales which has direct flights with BA and Virgin. The hotel we’re staying at, the Osprey Beach is very good, not luxury but comfortable, clean and steps to the excellent beach. Great food too. There is a cruise ship port at the other end of the island so it can get busy for very short periods, otherwise very quiet and laid back. Very friendly people. Providenciales also has small B&Bs and hotels but also large resort style hotels too. We did one week on ‘Provo’ and one week here.
