Living in Berkshire but need to get to Luton Airport for travel to catania for wedding later this year
There is no direct route from Heathrow so it’s either Gatwick , Stansted or Luton. Luton is winning as there is an afternoon flight compared to early morning at other 2.
I’ve never used Luton before so unsure of best option for travel. I don’t drive so its public transport only.
I think I have 2 options
Option 1
Travel to Heathrow and hop on a coach to Luton
Option 2
Elizabeth line to Farringdon and Travel to Luton by rail
Any advice greatly appreciated or other alternatives
I have looked travelling indirect with ITA from Heathrow but again timings are not great.
I hate coaches so it is Option 2 for me
And the Lilibeth line is nice and clean
Have a look at Easybus.com. There are buses from near Baker Street and Marble Arch (near Paddington where your train from Berkshire might well arrive). Take one that’s 2 timeslots earlier than you need (so 45-60 mins earlier timeslot) and then allow extra time, as for all public transport. But generally the journey takes the planned time especially if you’re going “To” Luton afternoon to arrive around 4pm or before. The actual Easybuses, if they’re still running, are usually the nicest, followed by Green Line followed by National Express. Basically they head North up the Finchley Road till they reach Luton Airport with only the last bit on the M1.
I hate buses too and that was the only way I would go to Luton 9 times out of 10, for years. The bus brings you right in front of the terminal.
However Rob did an article on the new train link funicular-type thing now also being open for the last bit of the rail journey from Luton Parkway to the airport, so that may be the best way now.
Option 2
Elizabeth line to Farringdon and Travel to Luton by rail
This would be your best option.
with the light rail up and running I would definitely favour the train
Option 2 would be my suggestion.
I don’t I know how the pricing and timing works out on the Gatwick options, but Farringdon to Gatwick is about the same as Farringdon to Luton. You could consider staying overnight at Gatwick before the morning flight and getting an extra half day in Sicily.
I’d go option 2 with firm back up plan in case of strikes.
