Forums Frequent flyer programs The British Airways Club Best value redemption for NY

  • 38 posts

Asking for a family member with no 2-4-1 vouchers who is looking for the best value Avios redemption to for a London-JFK return next year. They are looking for 3 seats and have around 370,000 points to spend. I’ve been looking at the points + miles and the Reward Flight Saver options but it’s hard to know which offers the best value/use of these points for them. Any thoughts?

Perhaps start with checking the peak/off-peak calendar and make a dummy booking to see the options.

For 3 people to NYC, I’d consider a BAPP. Put all the extended family’s spend there or pay council taxes to reach the threshold, for instance.

I assume you are targeting Club seats. In that case you may need to book rather early depending on your dates

Madrid to New York, 68k return (for 2, with a 241) off peak in business plus a couple of hundred cash each.

LON – JFK is too short to enjoy a business class redemption, even if you have enough miles.
Premium economy is a good compromise and you’ll have enough miles for everyone.

Many thanks for the quick replies. I did look at MAD but only 2 J seats were available on the IB direct route. I guess more may release closer to the time.

2 business seats is standard for IB. More may be released later the time if cash sales are low but this would probably only occur a week or two out from the travel date so if your people need to book their travel well in advance BA flights would be the better option.

Start with the basic premise that 370,000 is worth £3,700, so each ticket will be £1230 + “tax”.

Then be mindful if you are fairly flexible with your dates an HBO ticket on BA can come in at under £400, and that there’s a very civilised American daytime flight at 10:15 if you don’t like the thought of overnight economy.

I’d say try Aer Lingus from either Dublin or Shannon. My favourite redemption this year was 50k avios and £135.10 in taxes for a SNN-JFK flight in business. Peak goes up to 60k avios, and fits into the 370k avios budget.

    Just a suggestion!

It’s a great suggestion as you can also avoid immigration when landing!

The only problem is finding availability for 3 people.

Thank you. I’ve done DUB to other US cities before having Global Entry and the pre-clearance was a real bonus. Do Aer Lingus release flights at 330 days?
