I want to get two people from the Uk to Melbourne for two weeks sometime in Sep-Nov 2024. I have:
BA Gold
466K Avios (526k in Household)
1 x BA/Amex Premium Plus Companion Voucher
Virgin Gold
330k points
Miles and More/Lufthansa Gold
94k miles (with another 30-40k in the next couple of weeks)
Amex
270k points
I am thinking of LHR->DOH->MEL on Qatar which seems to be 720k which I have if I change my Amex points to Avios – any better options?
Qatar should be 180k Avios per person if you can get the ‘single Avios’ rate – worth looking from regional airports for extra availability eg Birmingham, EDinburgh
360k each is the “double price” option for Qatar that they offer if there is no reward availability. Given that’s £3600 of value then you may prefer to pay cash if prices continue to gently soften and you can find the right price. The best way on the price/quality spectrum would be to find standard reward availability on Qatar which would only be 180k each. If you are able to be flexible on departure point (e.g. any regional UK city where Qatar starts or restarts flights may well get a slab of availability), arrival point and date then you should be able to find something.

Ahh – had not realised that was a double rate but thought it was rather high!

Good advice and amazing articles – thank you
I managed to book LHR to Melbourne direct on Qatar at the end of January this year for early next year.
Had linked my BAEC to Qatar so the points were taken by Qatar
Couldn’t get Business both ways, got Economy out with Business return
Cost of 135,000 Avios plus £440 in taxes
Cost at the time was approx £5300
