Forums Payment cards Barclaycard Avios Best way to manage Barclaycard Upgrade voucher

  • 14 posts

    Hi.

Looking for some advice on the best way to manage the upgrade voucher in conjuction with BA Amex 241 Voucher.

My wife and I realised that we might actually be able spend £10k on both of these to get both vouchers. We know the BA Amex spend by date cannot be changed but from what I understand the Barclaycard spend by date resets to the date that you upgrade or downgrade.
Our current dates are end of January for Amex and June for Barclaycard. These are both in my wifes name. If we trigger a Barclaycard Voucher does downgrading and upgrading have any impact on the voucher once it is earned? Do you have to have an active Plus card when you redeem the voucher or travel?
We have a reasonable amount of spend that cannot be put on Amex which is why we have been keeping the Plus card for the 1.5 earn rate. We are usually well over half way to our £10k on Amex by June which is when we pause using that and start using the Barclaycard instead just to extend the expiration date out. Had a bit of a back log of vouchers to clear because of Covid which will be used up this year.

Any tips or opinions much appreciated.
    Thanks

I’m very happy with the value I’ve got from the 3 I’ve earned so far.

Seems like it’s best to downgrade and upgrade the Barclaycard as needed when we have got most of the way through our Amex spend.

You don’t always have the option to up/downgrade though, it has to be offered in your account.

If you already had the basic Avios card what reason would they have for not giving you the card they are getting a monthly fee for?

It’s just the way it is and well-documented here. You can only change cards if the relevant offer appears in your account. Barclays staff don’t seem to be able to override whatever algorithm sends you the offer!

I was aware you would get another voucher if you downgrade. But can you upgrade and get another voucher, then downgrade and get another in a short space of time? Just confirming if that is or is not the case. TIA

I have a BA Ug voucher triggered on Barclaycard Avios Plus but I haven’t selected whether I want UG voucher or to take the Avios. I understand if I don’t choose the UG opt will be auto selected in April but does anyone know if the valid/expiry date will be based on the triggered date or date the voucher was issued? Could be nearly a year extra validity if the latter as I triggered it quite soon after opening the card.

The expiry date should be 2 years from the date you select it.

Rob wrote an article on this, I believe the validity would be when it is issued rather than when it was earned. I am sitting on one too, I think it will be auto converted into voucher when my BA earning year reset in Sept (or is that changing this year, I forget). So @MR87 depending on when your BA year is, you could earn the voucher in Barclays don’t play the upgrade/downgrade game and still extend the life of your voucher if your BA earning dates is in your favour.
