Forums Payment cards Other payment cards Best way to pay for Colombian holiday in USD not COP

  • 97 posts

The holiday company in Bogota want to receive US Dollars (USD) in their Colombian bank account, and have supplied details of their local bank account and also their intermediary bank (Citibank) in New York.

Normally I use wise.com for these kinds of payment, but they don’t currently support Colombia apart from sending Colombian Pesos (COP).

I don’t think revolut can do this kind of FX payment. Can anyone suggest a good alternative? – better than just using Barclays or HSBC with their high charges and poor rates??

@Aliks – I have seen this before with exotic countries! When entering the recipient account details, have you tried changing the sending method? The choice for USD would usually be ACH/Wire/Swift and one of those should work.

Otherwise, have you looked at something like Western Union, often a good last resort and excellent rates in some currencies.

You should be able to do this using a HSBC Global Money account, their rates are comparable to Wise

    Hi JDB
    Thanks for the fast response.

On wise.com, when entering the recipient details, ACH and Wire ask for “routing numbers”, SWIFT looked most promising, but gave an error message “country not supported for USD”

I spoke at length with wise.com helpdesk, and, after consulting with their management, they confirmed that wise.com could not currently do this type of transaction.

Can Western Union deliver dollars outside the US?

@Aliks you are right, Wise cannot do it. I’ve done this via HSBC before but it was before they launched the currency account (small $ so wasn’t worried about rate). I have looked in my app though and it does seem to let me make a payment from my Global Money account in USD to a Colombian account that I have in my payees.

@Aliks – I’m afraid I don’t know the answer for WU in Colombia (although it works in some other SAm countries) but I suspect that if Wise can’t do it, that’s for local regulatory reasons so WU won’t be able to either.
