I’ve recently received welcome bonuses from both the BAPP and Barclay Avios cards. Atm, I’ve got the option of boosting by the standard 300%, which would net me 255k points:
I understand that generally, boosting Avios is the only decent-value option for purchasing points outright.
Still, £2350 is a lot to spend, but would put me comfortably within the amount of Avios I’d need for two business or first tickets with either JAL or Qatar to Japan. Or two first tickets with BA (with the 2-4-1 voucher, and if I’m able to actually find some seats that is). I’m planning to make the trip with my fiancé in the second half of 2026.
So I’ve got two question:
1. Is it correct that I have 30 days to boost after the points appear on my statement, or is it locked to each month? So that I can only boost Avios earned in August, in August.
2. For my proposed usage, long-haul business or first trips to Japan with either BA or partner airlines, is this a good opportunity?
Thank you!
Japan redemptions are very tricky to get on BA and I presume ‘non Flexi’ on Qatar is tricky. Can’t speak for JAL. You need to factor that in.
Only you know where you are on card sign-up bonuses. Let’s assume Amex Business Plat launched a six figure sign-up bonus soon again, would you qualify? (There are no rules on the bonus but do you have any sort of secondary income to call a business?) How about is Amex Personal Plat launched a huge offer? What capacity does you fiancee have for getting card bonuses?
Only you know what you will qualify for, of course.
Bottom line, as you say, is that Boost is the cheapest way of buying them, full stop.
Boosting is on a per-transaction basis, 30 days is correct. We recently boosted by around 140k to get to where we needed for a LHR-HND-SIN-LHR family holiday in a mix of classes, using two BAPP 2-4-1s. We used referrals and sign-up bonuses between my OH and I on BAPP, Amex Gold and Barclays to amass quite a stash of Avios. I’d say only boost once you’ve exhausted all other avenues. We use auto convert on Nectar to Avios, and spend everything we can on cards, even council tax and energy bills (Octopus accept Amex!). Good luck with getting the HND seats. Phone up 15mins before midnight/1am and hope for a nice agent. We phoned too late to get our outbound flights in CW and managed to get 2 WTP and 2 WT online but then succeeded in getting 4 CW back from SIN on the phone. First aren’t released at T-355.
