The time has come (sniff) now oldest offspring, age 25, has started her own Points journey (with an Amex Gold). It is therefore time to break up the BAEC HHA as I don’t want her using my painfully acquired Avios balance (accidentally or deliberately).
I’m sure it used to be the case that breaking up a HHA would mean the leaver got a percentage of the HHA balance (I might be talking 10 years ago). (And trick was therefore to transfer Avios out to another scheme temporarily first.)
I can’t see a reference to this now so am I just out of date and she will just get to keep “her” Avios?
Shouldn’t be any hurry as she may not even use her points as BAEC Avios.
Do you mean get a percentage of the HHA Avios balance in addition to her own Avios?
I don’t think that’s ever been the case.
My understanding is that when you break up a HHA each member retains their individual balances at the point of dissolution.
I think you are confusing breaking up the HHA with a member redeeming Avios. If anyone in the HHA books a flight using Avios, the Avios are deducted from each person in proportion to their Avios balance as a share of the HHA Avios. So if the one with the smallest balance books a flight, their own Avios balance is only reduced by a small amount and the main Avios owner contributes a far greater amount.
I think on departure from the HHA, they just fly off with their own Avios.
I just did this now and removed someone. I think there was a prompt or something saying that if the user is over 18, they’ll keep their account and keep their Avios they’ve earned or held.
Here’s the email I got about 20 minutes ago:
We confirm that xxxx xx x x has been removed from your Household Account, as requested.
This will mean any Avios collected by xxxx xx x x will be awarded to their own individual account and they will be able to spend Avios from the age of 18 onwards. Please ensure they update their email address.
If you have removed the last Member of your Household Account then your Household Account has been closed, your individual Executive Club membership will still be available to you.
We hope you continue to enjoy the benefits of your Executive Club membership and look forward to welcoming you on board soon.
With best wishes,Your Executive Club Team
