Forums Frequent flyer programs British Airways Club British Airways – upgrade at airport (cash only)

  • 65 posts

    Hello,

I just tried to upgrade an British Airways AVIOS booking from Economy to Club Europe.

The difference in AVIOS would be 7,600 but the staff at the airport were quoting 30,000 one way for a short haul upgrade.

Apparently they can only upgrade with cash at the airport (or convert this cash value to AVIOS), so have to do it via Executive Club ahead of time

    Hope this helps

Are they going off the newish lots of avios plus £1 pricing – did they quote extra cash fees?

No they were quoting the “Airport Upgrade Price (AUP) converted to Avios at a terrible rate!

Unlike some other airlines e.g Virgin this has indeed always (? At least 10+ years) been the case with BA, any amends to Avios bookings have to be done by the call centre.

If you do want to travel in a higher class it’s worth keeping an eye or setting up a seatspy as seats often open up 1-2 days out, especially CE. Gives you enough time to reach the call centre to sort it out before check in

I didn’t realise I can upgrade my flight after booking on avios? Which call centre do I call to upgrade? There are business class seats available on my flight.

It’s changing your flight rather than upgrading it if you originally booked an Avios seat. Just call and select the I used Avios / change booking option. May be a £35 change fee

Note that airport upgrades will usually not earn higher cabin Avios or tier points as it is processed as a simple seat move, not a full ticket reissue.

On BA they will earn the higher cabin Avios / TPs if your ticket was cash in the first place (if Avios then still 0)

This is unusual – many other airlines processes as you say and therefore do not award for online check in / airport upgrades
