Have an upcoming flight from LHR to LAX in business class and am booked on the 777-300ER. Thoughts on switching to the A380 (am on a fully flexible ticket so can switch flights and choose seats for no additional cost)? Have read all the criticism on the old Club World but have never flown the A380 and would love to do so.
If you’re switching from Club Suite to old Club World, prepare to be disappointed. The A380 is a magnificent aircraft but not when left to rot by BA – I would save your first A380 flight for a better airline when you can truly enjoy it, rather than take a worse seat (and probably dirty aircraft). Things like the bigger toilets are far more exciting when they’re clean and have had a bit of investment rather than looking like NHS airlines!
It depends where you sit on the A380. The middle 3 are definitely not worth giving up Club Suite for, however 56K on the upper deck was the best BA business class experience I’ve ever had in terms of privacy and spaciousness.
There are numerous online blogs with articles on the best seats, including here on HFP.
A380’s can be unreliable these days, however, so it depends how time-constrained you are!
CS vs CW is a bit of a no brainer, regardless of aircraft type. CW has a few decent window seats but everything in the aisle is completely exposed.
The A380 upper deck is nice, but CS beats it every day.
This is where it gets subjective. CS can start to feel a bit cramped on a very long flight (first world problems, I know!) but that particular seat on the A380 was like being in my own private little room.
My memories might be blurred by the £520 delay compo we got, however …
Personally, being tallish, 6’6”, I find old club world more comfortable for actually sleeping than club suites, but for the awake part suites win hands down. Also, the 380 being slightly unreliable and a small fleet, the possibility of a last minute change or delay is, subjectively, considerably higher, which may or may not matter to your plans. If you may need to change or cancel, it could be a good back up chance, or an opportunity for a hefty cash back if delayed…
