Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

Hi. New to all this! Recently used BA companion voucher and Avois to fly London Gatwick to Mauritius. Could only book economy out and premium economy for the return. Is there anyway I can upgrade, either with points or cash, to fly premium economy out?

You can’t ‘upgrade’ per se BUT if seats open up in either direction in a better cabin you can call BA, pay the extra Avios, taxes and a £35 per ticket change fee and the call centre will swap it around for you.

It’s also possible that you may be able to upgrade for cash via Manage My Booking at some point, or at check-in if you ask, but it’s best not to rely on this. Mauritius is the sort of route than can be empty down the back and full up front.

Is there anyway to find out if seats open up in premium economy or is it a case of checking everyday? Thanks for the help.

Seatspy is your friend here. Set up an alert for the appropriate classes you’re looking for. I think you’ll need a paid subscription. One limitation though, it doesn’t show the extra availability you get via the new style companion vouchers. You’d need someone with a ‘spare’ companion voucher to check for you on a regular basis.
