Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

Forums Payment cards American Express Canada 2027 / 2028

    Hi All

I’m hoping to fly as a family (2 adults, 2 children) return to Canada in 2027 or 2028. I know it’s possible as I’ve read up on it but all of the different offers / approaches confuses me so I just want to make sure I am doing my best to collect enough AMEX points. I’ve assumed the best carrier to fly with would be BA due to the ability to get companion vouchers?

How can I maximise the points I’m earning. We consolidate all of our spending on one card so not looking to have more than one active card in use at a time i.e. one AMEX one Mastercard. We have 1 x AMEX gold which is up for renewal in May. We also have a barclays premier account which is collecting airmiles and gives a free upgrade every year for 1 person 2 ways or 2 people 1 way.

I was thinking that we should perhaps take advantage of the platinum offer and apply in January for the 80k points in my husbands name, and then close my gold when it’s due for renewal in May? to open up future offers in my name, and transfer points to BA. Through the platinum we could get a companion voucher in 2025 and 2026 and use both in 2027? Is that right? Could I also use the barclays upgrade vouchers so I only need points one way for Premium Econpmy?

Presumably I should be getting a mastercard option too? Which would be best? I also have started shopping through avios to capture any extra points I can

    Appreciate any thoughts on this.

    Thanks

Hello and welcome to the points game.

Looking through your queries and questions, if you are looking for companion vouchers through an Amex card it will be the British Airways Premium Plus (BAPP), this would give you a companion voucher for 24 months to use. This means looking at that card in 2026.

You mention the Platinum card, this does not give a companion voucher at this moment in time, and is unlikely to change. However, you can transfer the Membership Rewards points to BA or a number of airlines which fly to Canada.

With the Barclays card, 1 person return or 2 people one way for the upgrade.

Have a read of the American Express cards on this site for the best route to earn points through the subscription offers as well.

You don’t mention where in Canada you want to travel to as Toronto or Montreal will have lower Avios costs compared to Vancouver due to the distance travelled.

Also, by 2027 or 2028 Avios redemptions may change as with points expect that nothing ever remains the same.
