I am travelling to LGW-FAO in Club Europe return on BA. I’ve just had the return leg cancelled with 15 days notice. When I go to the rebook page there are not alternative options available for travel that day. What are my legal options?
Theirs is a flight the next morning, but obviously would need to find accommodation for the extra night – would BA cover those additional cost?
Alternatively EasyJet have a flight that day, but obviously not in business. Can I force BA to put me and the family on this flight, and would I get compensation for the effective downgrade?
Thanks all
Yes BA would refund the cost of the hotel.
BA won’t rebook onto easy jet.
If the cancellation has only just happened then other options may not show yet should as flying into LHR or LCY or back to LGW via MAD on IB.
Explore other options then if they don’t appear in MMB then call.
As you’ve been given more than 15 days notice there is no compensation due.
You can also cancel for a full refund should you wish.
There is a lot of info on cancellations/downgrades in the relevant threads on here but briefly you would have to fight to get BA to reimburse you for booking a flight with another airline (and nil chance of downgrade compo), and you’d probably need to show that you really needed to fly that day. Much the easiest option, IMO, is to rebook yourself the next morning if you can, and BA will refund you for the extra hotel night and meals you take during the period you’re delayed.
LIS (& SVQ if flights availablr) should be close enough for rerouting too. LIS at least might be as quick as, or more convenient than a transit via MAD. IB may still be using longhaul aircraft on some LHR rotations though.
Easiest option is to pick the next day and have BA pay your hotel (they have to).
Second best option is to fly with IB to MAD and from there to FAO (you are in club so you get the lounge in Madrid, etc. it is longer but you will be at your destination by 5-6pm).
You could fly with TAP/EasyJet but good luck trying to get that. Most likely BA will say no and you will have to pay, then claim and fight for the refund. Plus making sure they don’t cancel the return because they say you missed the outbound.
We had this last year. (RFS flights) They canceled our return flight, giving 4 weeks notice. Antalya to LGW. The reroutes offered were back via Doha or via Munich. Both would have gotten us compo for delays. Via Doha something like 24 hours & Munich 12 hours
Taking a refund was bonkers
There were numerous direct flights back with other airlines. But they refused to budge.
We bought our own tickets home. BA refused to refund us, So took them to small claims, quoting CAA guidance on re-routing. They refunded us within 2 weeks of getting the MCOL paperwork – no argument
