I booked a return to VIE in October, out first thing in the morning, back in the evening. Annoyingly they have changed the Friday schedules, and cancelled the early morning flight.
I cancelled the booking for free, and rebooked going out Thursday night instead, and booked a hotel.
Subsequently I read something, either here or on FT, that suggested I could have got BA to rebook me on the Thursday AND pay for my hotel that evening.
Is that true?

Yes, following the cancellation you had the option of a refund or of rerouting, so being rebooked on that Thursday evening flight plus BA would have been liable to pay reasonable accommodation and food costs.
