Forums Frequent flyer programs British Airways Club Cancelling Amex 2-4-1 and Avios flight – how does it work?

  • 13 posts

Obviously before I bothered you good people I tried to call BA Exec Club, but with know luck, so here goes….
I have a two long haul flights ‘paid’ for with a 2-4-1 voucher and Avios. I need to cancel this flight. I was trying to confirm with BA exactly what will be refunded. Am I right in thinking I’ll get back my Avios, and any taxes paid minus any admin fee, but will I also get back me 2-4-1 voucher to reuse? I thank you in advance for any help, in the meantime let’s try calling BA again!

If you cancel for refund, you get everything back minus a £35 fee pp.

That means you get the Avios back, the cash (-£35pp) and the 2-4-1 voucher will be re-usable.

If you opt for a travel voucher they are all wrapped inside the voucher artificially extending the life of the 2-4-1.

@stevenhp1987 Thanks for the prompt reply. Do you happen to know how long the life of the refunded voucher would be, although I do anticipate using it fairly quickly once it’s refunded it would be nice to know what sort of wriggle room I have if my plans change. Thank you.

Your refunded 2-4-1 will have its original expiry date.

If that has passed you may want to consider getting an FTV (which keeps the 2-4-1 live) rather than a refund.

This is the email I’ve received….

    Booking Reference: ******
    Dear Mr ******,

Your future travel voucher is here. Thank you for your patience while we processed your application.

Am I correct to think everything is packaged up in the vouchers?
Am I correct to think I need to TELEPHONE them to make a new booking? This seems to be what the email implies

Anymore of your excellent knowledge is always welcome

    Thank you.

Am I also correct in assuming that if I rebook and there is a differences in Taxes this will be refunded to me?

I rang the US toll-free number a couple of days ago (via Skype) and got through quite quickly in the evening to book using a Future Travel Voucher.

Purposefully booked a 2-4-1 then got a voucher so I could rebook after the expiry of the 2-4-1 🙂

I can’t answer the refund question – I would assume another voucher but cannot say for sure.

    You’ll get yet another voucher.

You should have just cancelled it via the phone, cleanly, instead of taking the voucher.

@rob HfP Staff I was hanging on for 90 minutes, then work took precedent. So basically I’m f**ked? 😒

I rebooked a new avios/241 short haul trip, using a long haul avios/241 FTV, and got the balance of avios and taxes refunded.

I’m not sure, but maybe I got lucky. I used the ‘calling from outside the UK’ number and was answered within 2 minutes. I used my Future Travel Voucher to book a business class flight. After using some of the Avios, some of the Tax Credit and the 2-4-1 voucher I expected another FTV to be issued. Instead the balance of Avios as been added back to my account and the balance of the fairly substantial Tax Credit is being refunded to my Amex Card. The super helpful BA Lady told me that they were trying to reduce the number of FTVs that are out there, hence the refund. I’d like to thank all the people who contributed to my thread, it was very helpful.

I forgot to add to my above post that the BA employee I spoke to yesterday (Thursday) was adamant that there would be no Avios and Cash refunds, just a further FTV.
