Forums Frequent flyer programs British Airways Club Cancelling reward flight – 24 hr cooling off period

  • 122 posts

Hello. I am aware that it is possible to cancel a flight within 24 hours of booking for a full refund without penalty as per https://www.britishairways.com/en-gb/information/legal/customer-commitment/our-customer-commitment

Does that mean that if I book reward flights with a companion voucher, I would not be charged the £35 change/cancellation fee if I had to cancel within 24 hours of booking? I am aware that with Avios flights you can cancel for a full refund up to 24 hours before travel but I believe that you would be charged the £35 per person fee. But I am not sure if that fee is waived for cancellations within the 24 hour cooling off period. Thanks.

Your understanding is correct. Note that if you cancel online within 24h via MMB it will show you exactly what cash and avios are being refunded before you click confirm. I always screenshot this for me records. If I cancel via phone I take care to state clearly it is less than 24h since booking and I wish to cancel for full avios and cash refund. Tve CSA usually confirms this clearly too. I note the date and time of call in this case.

Thanks. So if you cancel an Avios booking via phone or online within 24 hours of booking, you are not charged the £35 fee?

I actually did this for the first time recently – I got a message confirming that everything would be refunded due to it being within 24 hours so you could screenshot that. Points and 241 came back instantly, fees within 48 hours. We could only dream of such efficiency during the pandemic!

ah ok – so you were charged the £35 fee and then this was refunded to you?

I cancelled a 241 within 24 hours 2 weeks ago and the voucher and Avios were returned immediately. The money was refunded to my Amex in a couple of days.

Yes, all 3 of us have confirmed for you that you will get the £35 (and all the avios) refunded if you cancel an avios booking within 24h. If you paid less than £35 cash option then you would get back what you paid when cancellung within 24h.

thank you. I wonder why they charge the £35 cancellation fee in the first place if the cancellation takes place within the 24 hour cooling period and they refund it anyway!

@FH2, after 24 hours they don’t actually “charge” any fee, they keep it out of whatever you have paid. If you’re cancelling within 24 hours, you don’t get charged anything, they refund you any money you have paid!

Many thanks for the clarification – that makes sense!
